Why drop size is not exact
A "drop" is not a fixed unit like a milliliter or a gram. Its size depends on the liquid and the tool used to release it.
- Viscosity. Thicker liquids, such as honey or glycerin, form larger drops than water. A thick liquid might release only 15 to 17 drops per mL instead of 20.
- Surface tension. This is the force that holds a drop together before it falls. Alcohol-based liquids have lower surface tension than water and tend to form smaller drops.
- Temperature. Cold liquids are usually thicker and form larger drops. Warm liquids flow more easily and form smaller drops.
- Dropper design. The width of the dropper tip and the material it is made from both change drop size. A pharmacy dropper and a kitchen dropper are not guaranteed to match.
Because of these factors, the 20-drops-per-mL rule is a working average for water-based liquids at room temperature, not a fixed physical law. Medical droppers that ship with a specific medicine are often tested and calibrated for that exact liquid, so the number printed on the label should be trusted over a general estimate.
Where drops-to-mL conversion is used
Medicine. Some liquid medicines, especially for infants and young children, are dosed in drops because the amounts are very small. A dose written as 0.5 mL might be measured out as 10 drops using the standard dropper that comes with the bottle. Eye drops use smaller drops than oral droppers, often close to 0.03 to 0.05 mL each, because the eye can only hold a limited amount of liquid before it overflows.
Laboratories. Older lab instructions sometimes call for a set number of drops of a chemical, particularly during titration, where a liquid is added slowly until a reaction happens. Modern labs mostly use pipettes measured in microliters (µL) for higher accuracy, since 1 mL equals 1,000 µL.
Home use. Recipes and essential oil blends often list amounts in drops because most kitchens do not have precision measuring tools. A common essential oil dilution is about 12 drops per ounce (30 mL) of carrier oil.
Prescriptions. The Latin word guttae, meaning drops, is abbreviated "gtt" on prescriptions and medical charts. For example, "gtt v" means 5 drops.
