A reading speed calculator measures how fast someone reads, in words per minute (WPM). It works by dividing the number of words in a passage by the time taken to read it. This tool uses a timed sample passage to estimate a reader's WPM and compares it to typical benchmarks for children and adults.

How to calculate reading speed

Reading speed is the number of words read divided by the time taken, expressed in minutes:

If the time is measured in seconds, convert it to minutes first by dividing by 60:

Worked example

A reader finishes a 600-word passage in 3 minutes.

A second example uses seconds. A reader finishes a 450-word passage in 120 seconds (2 minutes).

What counts as an average reading speed

What affects reading speed

Several things change how fast a person reads the same passage:

  • Text difficulty. Technical or unfamiliar material is read more slowly than a novel, often 30–50% slower.
  • Purpose. Scanning for one fact is much faster than studying for an exam.
  • Vocabulary. Familiar words are recognized instantly. Unfamiliar words force a pause.
  • Subvocalization. Many readers silently "say" each word in their head. Since this happens at roughly speaking speed, around 150–200 WPM, it limits how fast they can read.

Effective reading rate

Raw speed alone can be misleading, since it says nothing about how much was understood. Effective reading rate combines speed with comprehension:

Example: estimating a yearly reading total

Reading speed can also be used to estimate how much someone reads in a year. A reader who spends 30 minutes a day reading at 250 WPM reads:
