• Latest possible birth date = mating date + 72 days

The 65-day figure is a midpoint, not a guarantee. The 59-to-72-day range gives a more realistic window for when the pups might actually arrive.

Example calculation

Suppose two guinea pigs mate on June 1, 2023.

• Expected birth date: June 1 + 65 days = August 5, 2023
• Earliest possible birth date: June 1 + 59 days = July 30, 2023
• Latest possible birth date: June 1 + 72 days = August 12, 2023

The owner should expect birth around August 5, but should be ready for it any time from July 30 to August 12.

Stages of guinea pig pregnancy

• Days 1–21 (early pregnancy): The egg is fertilized and implants in the uterus. The mother shows almost no visible change.
• Days 22–42 (mid pregnancy): The abdomen begins to swell. The mother eats more and gains weight steadily.

Caring for a pregnant guinea pig

A pregnant guinea pig needs more food, more space, and closer attention than usual.

• Food: She needs roughly 30 to 50 percent more food than before pregnancy, plus a steady source of vitamin C, such as bell pepper or kale. Guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C and must get it from food.
• Calcium: Switching from timothy hay to alfalfa hay during pregnancy provides extra calcium for the growing pups.
• Space: A single guinea pig usually needs at least 7.5 square feet of cage space; a pregnant guinea pig should have more, around 10.5 square feet, plus a quiet nesting area.
• Males: The male should be removed right after mating. Females can become pregnant again within hours of giving birth, and a second pregnancy so soon is dangerous for the mother.
• Weight: Owners should weigh the mother regularly. A gain of about 25 to 50 percent of her starting weight is normal by the end of pregnancy.
• Vet care: A vet familiar with exotic pets can confirm pregnancy by palpation or ultrasound, usually from about three weeks in, and can check for problems.
