What Is the Mexican Carbon Footprint Calculator?
The Mexican carbon footprint calculator estimates how many tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) a person in Mexico produces in a year. It uses emission factors built for Mexico's electricity grid, transportation habits, and food system, and covers three areas: transportation, home energy, and food.
A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gas a person's activities release into the air, usually measured in tons of CO2 per year. Driving a car, running an air conditioner, and eating meat all add to that total.
How to Calculate Your Carbon Footprint
The calculator needs four pieces of information.
- Transportation. Enter the daily commute distance in kilometers and choose car or public transport. If the distance varies day to day, use an average.
- Electricity and gas. Find monthly electricity use in kWh and gas use in cubic meters (m³) on a CFE (Comisión Federal de Electricidad) bill. Electricity is usually labeled "Consumo" or "kWh consumidos."
- Meat consumption. Estimate weekly meat intake in kilograms. A chicken breast weighs about 200 grams; a steak is closer to 300 grams.
- Local food percentage. Estimate what share of food comes from local sources rather than imported goods.
The calculator then shows total emissions in tons of CO2 per year, split into transportation, energy, and food, plus tips based on which category is largest.
The tool also checks for mistakes. It rejects negative numbers and keeps the local-food percentage between 0 and 100. If the daily commute is entered as more than 1,000 km, it shows a warning, since that usually means a monthly distance was typed into a daily field.
Carbon Footprint Formula
The calculator adds up three parts, each in kilograms of CO2 per year, then divides by 1,000 to get tons.
Transportation
- D = daily commute distance (km)
- EF_transport = 0.18 kg CO2/km for a car, or 0.08 kg CO2/km for public transport
Energy
- E = monthly electricity use (kWh); 0.45 kg CO2/kWh reflects Mexico's national grid mix of hydro, gas, and other sources
- G = monthly gas use (m³); 1.92 kg CO2/m³ is the factor used for natural gas
Food
- M = weekly meat consumption (kg); 18 kg CO2 is released per kilogram of meat eaten, averaged across common types raised in Mexico
- L = percentage of food that is locally sourced; the remaining fraction, (1 − L/100), is multiplied by 0.12 kg CO2 per day to account for transporting imported food

Example
Consider someone who drives 20 km a day, uses 150 kWh of electricity and 20 m³ of gas a month, eats 1 kg of meat a week, and sources 30% of food locally.
- Transportation: 20 × 365 × 0.18 = 1,314 kg → 1.31 tons
- Energy: (150 × 0.45 + 20 × 1.92) × 12 = (67.5 + 38.4) × 12 = 1,270.8 kg → 1.27 tons
- Food: (1 × 52 × 18) + ((1 − 0.30) × 0.12 × 365) = 936 + 30.66 = 966.66 kg → 0.97 tons
- Total: (1,314 + 1,270.8 + 966.66) / 1000 = 3.55 tons CO2 per year
Switching that commute to public transport would cut transportation emissions from 1.31 tons to 0.58 tons a year, a difference of about 0.73 tons.

What This Calculator Does Not Measure
The results are an estimate, not an exact measurement. Several things are left out.
- Regional differences. The electricity factor is a national average. Wind-heavy states like Baja California likely have lower real emissions per kWh; coal- or oil-heavy regions have higher ones.
- Vehicle type. The car factor assumes an average vehicle. A hybrid emits less; an older truck emits more.
- Diet beyond meat. Dairy, processed food, and produce also carry emissions, but only meat and the local/imported food split are counted here.
- Air travel and goods. Flights, clothing, electronics, and other purchases are not included.
Because of these gaps, treat the result as a way to compare choices and track change over time, not as a precise personal total.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a carbon footprint? It is the total greenhouse gas emissions a person's activities cause in a year, usually expressed in tons of CO2 or CO2 equivalent. It includes direct emissions, like burning gasoline, and indirect ones, like the power plant that makes a person's electricity.
Why does this calculator use different numbers than global calculators? Mexico's electricity comes from a different mix of sources than the United States or Europe, and its transportation and food systems work differently too. Using Mexico-specific factors instead of global averages gives a closer estimate for people living there.
What counts as an average carbon footprint in Mexico? National data puts Mexico's average at roughly 3 tons of CO2 per person per year, though estimates vary by source and year. A result well under that suggests a lower-than-average footprint; a result well above it suggests room to cut back.
Why isn't air travel included? Flying has a large per-trip impact, but how often people fly varies enormously, and tracking every trip would complicate the tool. It focuses instead on the daily, recurring choices people can adjust regularly.
How do I find my electricity and gas use? Both appear on a CFE bill. Electricity is listed in kWh, often next to "Consumo." If a bill covers two months instead of one, divide the total by two before entering it.
What is the difference between CO2 and CO2 equivalent? CO2 is one greenhouse gas. Others, like methane, trap more heat per ton over 100 years. "CO2 equivalent" (CO2e) converts other gases into the amount of CO2 that would cause the same warming, which is why food-related figures sometimes use CO2e even though this calculator reports plain CO2.
