A cubic yards to tons converter turns a volume measurement into a weight measurement for a bulk material such as soil, gravel, sand, or concrete. Because materials have different densities, the same volume of two materials can weigh very different amounts. A cubic yard of mulch weighs about 1,000 pounds. A cubic yard of concrete weighs about 4,000 pounds.

What Changes a Material's Density

  • Moisture. Wet material weighs more than dry material. Soil soaked by rain can weigh 20 to 30 percent more than dry soil from the same pile.
  • Compaction. Loose gravel fresh off a delivery truck weighs less per cubic yard than the same gravel after it has been driven over and packed down. The difference can reach 10 to 15 percent.
  • Particle size. Fine sand packs more tightly than coarse gravel, leaving less air space between grains. This is one reason concrete is denser than wood chips.
  • Composition. Soil sold as "topsoil" varies by source. Clay-heavy soil weighs more than sandy soil.

For work where precision matters, such as commercial concrete or asphalt orders, a supplier can provide a density certificate for the specific batch.

Example Calculations

Soil: 10 cubic yards of soil (density 1.4) weighs 10 × 1.4 = 14 tons.

Real-World Examples

Ready-mix concrete delivery. Concrete is ordered in cubic yards but delivered by weight, since that is how a truck scale measures the load. Five cubic yards of concrete weighs about 10 tons, or 20,000 pounds, before adding the weight of the truck itself. Dispatchers check this against road weight limits, typically 80,000 pounds total for a loaded tractor-trailer in the United States.

Excavation. A basement 30 feet by 40 feet by 8 feet deep has a volume of 30 × 40 × 8 = 9,600 cubic feet. Divided by 27 (the number of cubic feet in a cubic yard), that is about 356 cubic yards of soil. At a soil density of 1.4 tons per cubic yard, the excavated soil weighs about 498 tons. A standard dump truck carries 10 to 15 tons, so hauling the soil away takes roughly 34 to 50 truck trips.

Foundation gravel. A compacted gravel base is often specified at 6 inches deep, or 0.5 feet. For a 2,000-square-foot foundation, that is 2,000 × 0.5 = 1,000 cubic feet, or about 37 cubic yards. At a gravel density of 1.5, that gravel weighs about 56 tons. Ordering only 30 tons, thinking it is close enough, would leave the job more than 25 tons short.

Raised garden beds. A bed 4 feet by 8 feet by 2 feet deep holds 64 cubic feet, or about 2.4 cubic yards of soil. At a soil density of 1.4, that is about 3.3 tons. Many suppliers set delivery minimums around 5 tons, so a single small bed order may not meet the minimum.

Dumpster rental. A 30-cubic-yard dumpster filled with mixed construction debris (concrete, wood, drywall), at a typical density of 1.3 to 1.6 tons per cubic yard, holds 39 to 48 tons. Other Units Used for the Same Purpose

Material volume is also described as bank, loose, or compacted. Bank measures material still in the ground. Loose measures it after excavation, when it typically takes up about 30 percent more space.
