Why the conversion matters
A digital file is measured in pixels. A printed page is measured in inches. Without a DPI value, a pixel count alone cannot say how big something will appear once printed. The same 1000-pixel-wide image is about 10.4 inches wide at 96 DPI but only about 3.3 inches wide at 300 DPI.
