Why divide by 2.54 instead of multiplying by 0.393701

Many converters multiply by a rounded factor, such as 0.393701 inches per centimeter. That shortcut is close enough for most everyday use, but it is not exact, because 0.393701 is a rounded version of 1 ÷ 2.54.
