What is a floor joist calculator?
A floor joist calculator finds the joist size, spacing, and quantity needed to support a floor safely. It uses the span (the distance a joist must cross without support), the wood species, and the expected floor load. Floor joists are the horizontal wood beams under a floor that carry its weight to the foundation or to load-bearing walls. Choosing a size that is too small lets the floor sag or bounce; choosing one larger than needed wastes lumber.
Key factors in joist sizing
Five things decide which joist works for a floor:
- Span: the unsupported distance a joist covers, in feet.
- Wood species: Douglas Fir, Southern Pine, Hem-Fir, or Spruce-Pine-Fir. Each has different strength and stiffness, so it allows a different maximum span for the same size and spacing.
- Load: light (30 pounds per square foot, typical of bedrooms), medium (40 psf, typical of living areas), or heavy (60 psf, typical of storage areas).
- Joist size: the dimensional lumber size, such as 2x8 or 2x10.
- Spacing: the distance between the centers of adjacent joists, usually 12, 16, or 24 inches.
How floor joist spans are determined
Building codes publish span tables that state, for each combination of species, size, spacing, and load, the longest span a joist may cross. The whiz.tools calculator uses the maximum spans from the 2012 International Residential Code (IRC) tables for lumber graded #2, assuming a 10 psf dead load (the weight of the floor structure itself) and a deflection limit of L/360. L/360 means the joist may bend no more than 1/360th of its span under the design load; a 12-foot joist may deflect no more than 0.4 inches.
These maximum spans come from a physical bending-and-deflection calculation for each wood species and are not proportional to one another. A stronger species does not simply add a fixed percentage to every span. For example, at 40 psf and 16-inch spacing, a 2x10 Southern Pine joist can span 16 feet 1 inch, slightly longer than a 2x10 Douglas Fir joist at 15 feet 5 inches, and the two species tie exactly in several other size and spacing combinations. Each cell in the table must be looked up on its own; it cannot be reconstructed by scaling one species' numbers by a fixed factor.
The table below shows the maximum span for Douglas Fir at a 40 psf (medium) load, for illustration:

The heavy load (60 psf) option is not part of the IRC residential tables, which stop at 40 psf. The calculator estimates it by scaling the 40 psf span down using standard bending and deflection formulas, and flags the result as an engineering estimate rather than a code value.
How to calculate floor joist size and spacing
- Pick the wood species available for the project.
- Measure the span: the clear distance the joist must cross, in feet.
- Pick the load category that matches the room's use.
- Look up the smallest joist size, at the widest spacing, whose maximum span (from the table for that species and load) is at least as long as the measured span. Wider spacing is checked first, since it uses less lumber; within a spacing, the smallest size that is strong enough is chosen.
Example
A builder needs to frame a floor with a 14-foot span, using Douglas Fir joists under a medium load (40 psf, a typical living area).
Checking 24-inch spacing first: a 2x6 (8'1" max), 2x8 (10'3" max), and 2x10 (12'7" max) are all too short. A 2x12 allows 14'7", which covers the 14-foot span. The calculator recommends a 2x12 joist at 24 inches on center.
How many floor joists are needed?
The joist count depends on the floor's width โ the dimension measured across the joists, at a right angle to the span โ not on the span itself. Joists are laid out across that width at the chosen spacing.
Formula: number of joists = ceiling(width in inches รท spacing in inches) + 1
The "+1" accounts for the joist at each end of the run, in addition to the joists at each spacing interval in between.
Example
A floor is 20 feet wide, with joists spaced 16 inches on center. Converting to inches: 20 ร 12 = 240 inches. Dividing by the spacing: 240 รท 16 = 15. Adding the end joist: 15 + 1 = 16 joists.
Alternatives to dimensional-lumber joists
Solid-lumber joists are not the only option. Engineered I-joists, made from wood flanges bonded to a plywood or OSB web, span farther than solid lumber and resist warping. Floor trusses are prefabricated frames that span even farther and leave room for ducts and pipes to pass through their depth. Steel joists appear in commercial buildings that need extra fire resistance. Each of these products uses its own manufacturer span tables rather than the IRC dimensional-lumber tables this calculator is based on.

What is the standard spacing for floor joists?
The standard spacing options are 12, 16, and 24 inches on center. Sixteen inches is most common in residential framing because it lines up with the edges of standard 4-by-8-foot plywood and OSB sheets. Closer spacing makes a stiffer floor but uses more lumber; wider spacing uses less lumber but may need thicker subfloor sheathing.
How do I determine the right joist size for my project?
Three inputs decide it: the span, the wood species, and the load category. Enter them into the calculator to get a size and spacing. In general, a longer span or a heavier load calls for a deeper joist or closer spacing.
What is the maximum span for a 2x10 floor joist?

How many floor joists do I need for my project?
The count depends on the floor's width โ the distance across the joists, not the span they run โ and the joist spacing. Divide the width in inches by the spacing in inches, round up, then add one for the end joist. A 20-foot-wide floor with 16-inch spacing needs 16 joists.
What is joist deflection and why does it matter?
Deflection is how much a joist bends under load. Too much deflection makes a floor feel bouncy and can crack tile or plaster above it. Building codes commonly limit deflection to L/360, meaning a 12-foot joist may not bend more than 0.4 inches under its design load.
Can I use engineered lumber instead of dimensional lumber for floor joists?
Yes. I-joists, laminated veneer lumber (LVL), and floor trusses are common substitutes. They often span farther and resist warping better than solid lumber, but they follow manufacturer span tables rather than the IRC tables this calculator uses, so they need a separate check.
