A lumber estimator calculator works out how much dimensional lumber a construction project needs. It takes a project's length, width, and height, a lumber size such as 2×4, and an allowance for waste, then returns the total board feet, the total number of pieces, and how many pieces of each standard length to buy.

What Is a Board Foot?

A board foot is the standard unit for measuring the volume of lumber in North America. One board foot equals a piece of wood that is 12 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 1 inch thick, or 144 cubic inches of wood.

Board feet let buyers compare lumber of different sizes on equal terms. A 2×10 board holds far more wood than a 2×4 of the same length, so lumber yards price and sell dimensional lumber by the board foot rather than by the piece alone. Prices are often quoted per thousand board feet, abbreviated MBF.

How to Calculate Board Feet

The formula is:

Thickness and width are the lumber's nominal size, the number used in its name, such as the "2" and "4" in 2×4. That matters because a piece of dimensional lumber measures smaller than its name once it has been dried and planed smooth. A 2×4 actually measures about 1.5 by 3.5 inches. For pricing and volume, though, the lumber trade uses the nominal number, not the smaller actual one, and this calculator does the same when it totals board feet.

Worked Example

A 2×4 has a nominal thickness of 2 inches and a nominal width of 4 inches. For a piece that is 8 feet long:

Five such pieces come to 5 × 5.33 = 26.67 board feet. The calculator rounds every total up to the next whole board foot, so it would report this as 27 board feet, making sure the estimate never falls short of what the project needs.

Nominal vs. Actual Lumber Dimensions

"Nominal" size is the name a board is sold under. "Actual" size is what a tape measure shows. The gap exists because rough-cut lumber shrinks as it dries and loses more material when it is planed smooth on all four sides.

These eight sizes are the lumber types offered by this calculator. The actual sizes matter when checking how a board will fit against other materials. Board-foot totals, however, are still figured from the nominal number, because that is the size lumber is priced and sold by.

Waste Factor

Construction lumber is rarely used without some loss. Boards get cut short, damaged, or set aside for a bad knot. The waste factor adds a percentage on top of the base amount needed:

The calculator defaults to 10%, a common figure for standard framing, and can be set anywhere from 0% to 50%. Simple projects with mostly straight cuts can often use a lower figure, around 5%. Projects with many angles, such as stairs or hip roofs, or lumber with more defects, usually call for a higher one, often 15% or more.

Standard Lumber Lengths

Dimensional lumber in the United States is commonly sold in five lengths: 8, 10, 12, 16, and 20 feet. Given the total linear footage a project needs, the calculator works out a combination of these five lengths that covers the requirement with as little leftover material as possible.

Limitations

This calculator turns a project's overall length, width, and height into a simplified estimate of the framing lumber needed. It is not a full material takeoff and does not replace one for a complex build. It does not check whether a chosen lumber size can span the distances involved, does not check lumber grade requirements, and does not check local building codes. Anyone planning a load-bearing structure should confirm span and grade requirements against a building code, such as the International Residential Code, or with a qualified professional. The calculator also only covers dimensional lumber; it does not estimate sheet goods such as plywood or oriented strand board, which are normally figured by square footage instead of board feet.

History of the Board Foot

The board foot developed as a trade unit in the North American lumber industry, becoming common by the late 1700s as a way to price and compare wood of different sizes. Through the 1800s, lumber was typically cut to its actual named size. As milling and kiln-drying became standard practice in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, boards began shrinking below their nominal size once dried and surfaced smooth. The American Lumber Standards Committee formalized nominal-to-actual size conversions for softwood lumber in the 1920s, fixing the system still used across North America today.

What is a board foot?

Ten percent is a reasonable starting point for most framing projects. A simple project with straight cuts can often use less, around 5%. A project with many angled cuts, such as a deck with stairs, or lumber of lower or mixed grade, usually needs more, often 15% or higher.

Can this calculator be used for plywood or OSB?

No. It covers dimensional lumber sizes from 2×4 to 6×6. Sheet goods such as plywood and oriented strand board are normally estimated by dividing the area to be covered by 32, since a standard sheet measures 4 by 8 feet, or 32 square feet.

Does this calculator follow building codes?

No. It estimates quantities of lumber, not structural requirements. Span limits for joists and beams, required lumber grades, and header sizes over openings are all set by local building codes, such as the International Residential Code, and should be checked separately, along with any required permits.
