The DIY shed cost calculator estimates how much it costs to build a backyard shed. It uses the shed's length, width, and height, the building material, the roof style, and any windows, a door, and hardware. The result is a materials cost estimate, not a full construction budget.

How to Use the Calculator

Enter four groups of information.

Dimensions: length and width must be at least 4 feet each. Height must be at least 6 feet.
Material: wood, metal, or vinyl. Each has a default price per square foot that can be edited.
Roof type: flat, gabled, or gambrel. Each uses a different amount of roofing material for the same footprint.
Features: an optional door, optional windows (1 to 8), and hardware, which is always included.

How the Shed Cost Formula Works

The calculator adds together the cost of the walls, the roof, and any extras.

Wall area

Wall area covers the four sides of the shed:

Roof area

Roof area is the footprint multiplied by a factor that depends on roof shape. A sloped roof has more surface area than the flat footprint below it, because the sloped surface is longer than a flat rectangle spanning the same space.

A gambrel roof has a steep lower slope and a shallower upper slope on each side, which is why it needs much more roofing material than a single-pitch gabled roof.

Total cost

Roofing material costs 20% more than wall material per square foot, since the calculator assumes it needs to resist weather from above.

Default prices per square foot, which the calculator lets a user edit: wood $2.50, metal$ 3.75, vinyl $4.25.

Worked Example

Take a shed that is 10 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 8 feet tall, built from wood at $2.50 per square foot, with a gabled roof, one door, and two windows.

Wall area: 2 × (10 × 8) + 2 × (8 × 8) = 160 + 128 = 288 sq ft
Wall cost: 288 × $2.50 = **$ 720**
Roof area: 10 × 8 × 1.15 = 92 sq ft
Roof cost: 92 × ( $2.50 × 1.2) = 92 ×$ 3.00 = $276
Window cost: 2 × $50 = **$ 100**
Door cost: $150

Total: 720 + 276 + 100 + 150 + 75 = $1,321

How roof type changes the total

Using the same 10×8×8 wood shed, only the roof type changes:

A gambrel roof costs more than a gabled roof on the same footprint mainly because it uses more roofing material, not because of a difference in wall cost.

Choosing a Material

Wood is the cheapest option by default, easy to cut and paint, but needs regular sealing or staining to resist rot.
Metal costs more than wood, resists pests and fire, but can rust over time and gets hot inside without insulation.
Vinyl is the most expensive of the three by default, does not need painting, and resists fading, but is harder to repair if damaged.

A shed builder can change any of the three default prices in the calculator to match local supplier quotes.

Costs the Calculator Does Not Include

The calculator only prices materials for the walls, roof, door, windows, and hardware. Several other costs commonly apply to a real shed project:

Labor, if the builder hires someone instead of building it themselves.
A foundation, such as a gravel pad, concrete slab, or pressure-treated skids.
Permits, which many local governments require above a certain shed size.
Site preparation, such as leveling ground or clearing vegetation.
Paint, trim, and shelving, which are finishing touches rather than structural materials.

A total project budget should add these on top of the calculator's material estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the cost of a DIY shed calculated? The calculator multiplies wall area by the material's price per square foot, multiplies roof area by 1.2 times that price, and adds the cost of any windows, a door, and hardware. See the formula and worked example above.

Why does a gambrel roof cost more than a gabled roof? A gambrel roof has two roof slopes on each side instead of one, so it covers about 55% more area than the flat footprint, compared with about 15% more for a gabled roof. More roof area means more roofing material to buy.

Does the calculator include labor cost? No. It estimates material costs only. Hiring a contractor typically adds a per-square-foot labor charge on top of the material total, and that charge varies by region and builder.

Do I need a permit to build a shed? It depends on the shed's size and the local jurisdiction. Many places allow small sheds, often under about 120 square feet, without a permit, but rules vary by city and county. Checking with the local building department before starting is the reliable way to find out.
