What Is the Dog Heat Cycle Tracker

The dog heat cycle tracker is a free calculator that predicts when a female dog's next heat cycle, also called estrus, will start. A user enters the dates of past heat cycles, and the tool works out the average number of days between them. It then adds that average to the most recent date to estimate the next three cycles.

A dog's heat cycle is the recurring period in which an unspayed female dog can become pregnant. Tracking it helps owners avoid unplanned litters, plan veterinary visits, and time breeding.

The Four Phases of the Canine Heat Cycle

A female dog's reproductive cycle has four phases.

  1. Proestrus (about 7 to 10 days): The vulva swells and bloody discharge begins. Male dogs are drawn to the female, but she usually will not let them mate yet.
  2. Estrus (about 5 to 14 days): The fertile phase. The female is now willing to mate, and discharge often becomes lighter in color.
  3. Diestrus (about 60 to 90 days): The phase after estrus. If the dog is pregnant, this is the pregnancy. If not, her hormone levels still behave as if she were pregnant for a while.
  4. Anestrus (about 100 to 150 days): A resting phase with no heat-related hormone activity, until the cycle starts again with the next proestrus.

From the start of one heat cycle to the start of the next is usually around six months, or about 180 days. The interval varies widely: some small breeds cycle roughly every four months, while some giant breeds cycle only once a year. Age, breed, health, weight, and the season can all affect the timing.

How the Tracker Predicts the Next Cycle

The tracker uses two steps: find the average interval, then project it forward.

Step 1: Average interval. For each pair of consecutive recorded dates, count the number of days between them. Add up those numbers and divide by how many intervals there are.

With only one recorded date, there is no interval to measure yet. In that case the tracker falls back to a standard 180-day interval, a commonly cited average for the canine cycle, and shows a note that the estimate is not yet personalized.

Step 2: Project forward. The tracker adds the average interval to the most recent recorded date to predict the next cycle, then adds it again (doubled, tripled) to predict the two cycles after that.

where n is 1 for the next cycle, 2 for the one after, and 3 for the one after that.

Example Calculation

Suppose an owner records three heat cycle start dates: January 15, 2025; July 20, 2025; and January 18, 2026.

  • First interval: January 15 to July 20, 2025 = 186 days.
  • Second interval: July 20, 2025 to January 18, 2026 = 182 days.
  • Average interval: (186 + 182) Ă· 2 = 184 days.

The tracker adds 184, 368, and 552 days to the last recorded date (January 18, 2026) to get the next three predicted cycles:

  • July 21, 2026
  • January 21, 2027
  • July 24, 2027

As more real cycle dates are added, the average updates and the predictions become more specific to that individual dog.

How to Use the Tracker

  1. Enter the start date of a past heat cycle and select "Add Date." Dates cannot be in the future.
  2. Add any other past cycle dates that are known. Each new date must be at least 14 days away from any date already recorded, since heat cycles do not start that close together.
  3. Once at least one date is recorded, the tracker shows the next three predicted cycles and a timeline. With only one date, it uses the 180-day default and marks the prediction as unpersonalized. With two or more dates, it shows the calculated average interval.
  4. Use "Copy Predictions" to copy the predicted dates, or "Remove" to delete a single date. "Clear All Data" erases every recorded date after a confirmation prompt.

Signs a Dog Is in Heat

Common signs include a swollen vulva, bloody or straw-colored discharge, more frequent urination, a change in mood, extra attention from male dogs, and holding the tail off to one side (called flagging). The tracker cannot detect these signs; it only predicts dates based on data entered by the user. Watching the dog is still needed to confirm a cycle has actually started.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are the predictions? Accuracy depends on how many past cycles are recorded and how regular the dog's cycles are. A single recorded date gives only the generic 180-day estimate. Two or more dates let the tracker calculate a real average, which is usually closer to that dog's actual pattern, though some month-to-month variation is normal.

What happens with just one recorded date? The tracker cannot compute an average from a single date, so it uses a standard 180-day interval and shows a note explaining that the prediction is not yet personalized.

Why does the tracker reject a date that is 10 days after another one? Heat cycles do not repeat every few days, so the tracker requires any two recorded dates to be at least 14 days apart. A closer date is more likely a data-entry mistake than a real second cycle.

Can this tracker be used for a dog's very first heat cycle? No. Without any past date, there is nothing to predict from. Once the first heat cycle is recorded, the tool can estimate the next one using the 180-day default.

Can spayed dogs have heat cycles? No. Spaying removes the ovaries and uterus, which ends heat cycles permanently. The tracker is only useful for unspayed female dogs.

How long does a single heat cycle last? The heat itself, meaning proestrus plus estrus, typically lasts about two to three weeks. The tracker predicts when the next heat will begin, not how long each one will last.
