What is a dog nutrition calculator?
A dog nutrition calculator estimates how many calories a dog needs each day, along with a suggested split of protein, fat, and carbohydrate. It starts from the dog's weight, then adjusts the result for age, activity level, health status, and breed size. The estimate gives owners a starting point for portioning commercial food or building a homemade diet, though it does not replace advice from a veterinarian.
How to calculate a dog's resting energy requirement (RER)
The starting point for any dog calorie estimate is the Resting Energy Requirement, or RER. RER is the energy a dog burns just staying alive at rest, with no digestion, exercise, or growth included. It comes from a formula published in veterinary nutrition references such as the Merck Veterinary Manual:
The exponent 0.75 reflects the fact that metabolism does not scale in direct proportion to body weight. A dog twice as heavy does not burn exactly twice the calories at rest.
Example: a 20 kg dog has an RER of 70 × 20^0.75 = 70 × 9.46 ≈ 662 kcal/day.
How to calculate daily energy requirement (DER)
Resting energy alone is not enough food for a dog, because dogs also move, digest, grow, or reproduce. The Daily Energy Requirement (DER) scales RER up by a single factor drawn from published veterinary tables. The calculator picks exactly one factor for each dog. It does not multiply several separate factors together, because each published factor already accounts for normal activity and life stage on its own.
The calculator chooses the factor in this order, stopping at the first rule that matches the dog:

A second, smaller adjustment then accounts for breed size, since small dogs burn more energy per kilogram of body weight than large ones:

The life-stage factor and the breed-size adjustment are multiplied together, then the result is capped between 1.0 and 3.0, matching the range found in the published sources:
Example: a healthy adult 20 kg dog with moderate activity and a medium-size breed uses the 1.6 factor and the 1.0 breed adjustment. DER = 662 × 1.6 × 1.0 ≈ 1,059 kcal/day.
How to calculate macronutrients from daily calories
Once daily calories are known, the calculator splits them into protein, fat, and carbohydrate, using 4 kcal per gram of protein or carbohydrate and 9 kcal per gram of fat.
Protein share of calories:
- Puppies: 30%
- Seniors: 25%, regardless of activity level
- Adults with high activity: 30%
- Adults with low or moderate activity: 25%
Fat share of calories:
- High activity: 20%
- Low activity: 10%
- Moderate activity: 15%
Carbohydrate grams take up whatever calories remain after protein and fat are subtracted.
Example, continuing the 20 kg adult dog above (1,059 kcal, moderate activity):
- Protein: 1,059 × 0.25 ÷ 4 ≈ 66 g
- Fat: 1,059 × 0.15 ÷ 9 ≈ 18 g
- Carbohydrate: (1,059 − 66×4 − 18×9) ÷ 4 ≈ 158 g
Worked examples
Active adult, homemade diet. A 15 kg adult dog with high activity and a medium build has RER = 70 × 15^0.75 ≈ 534 kcal, and a DER factor of 2.0 (high activity), giving DER ≈ 1,068 kcal/day. Its macronutrient split is about 80 g protein, 24 g fat, and 133 g carbohydrate.
Weight loss. A 25 kg dog marked "overweight" has RER ≈ 783 kcal and uses the 1.0 weight-loss factor, giving DER ≈ 783 kcal/day. The same dog at the same weight, marked "healthy" with moderate activity, would use the 1.6 factor instead, giving DER ≈ 1,253 kcal/day. The gap between the two figures is the calorie deficit built into the weight-loss recommendation.
Commercial food portions. A 5 kg puppy has RER ≈ 234 kcal and a DER factor of 2.0, giving DER ≈ 468 kcal/day. If a dry food contains 350 kcal per cup, that works out to about 1.3 cups a day, usually split into three or four meals.
Pregnancy. A pregnant 20 kg dog uses the 3.0 gestation factor. DER = 662 × 3.0 ≈ 1,986 kcal/day, roughly three times her resting energy requirement.
Senior dogs. A 10 kg senior dog has RER ≈ 394 kcal and uses the 1.4 factor, giving DER ≈ 552 kcal/day. The same dog as a healthy moderate-activity adult would use the 1.6 factor, giving DER ≈ 630 kcal/day, about 14% more (equivalently, the senior figure is about 12% less than the adult one).
Limitations
These formulas give a starting estimate, not a fixed prescription. Metabolism varies between individual dogs even at the same weight, age, and activity level. Spayed or neutered status, climate, coat type, and underlying illness can all shift real energy needs above or below the calculated figure. Owners should watch body weight and body condition over several weeks and adjust food amounts if a dog is gaining or losing weight unintentionally. A veterinarian should be consulted for dogs with kidney disease, diabetes, food allergies, or other medical conditions that affect diet.

Do senior dogs really need fewer calories? Yes. The calculator applies a lower energy factor to senior dogs than to moderately active adults, reflecting a typically slower metabolism and reduced activity in older age.
Can this calculator help with weight loss? Selecting "overweight" applies a lower energy factor intended to create a calorie deficit for gradual, safe weight loss. Dogs should generally lose no more than 1–2% of body weight per week; a vet can confirm a safe target weight.
