A sun exposure calculator estimates how many minutes a person can stay in direct sunlight before their skin is likely to burn. It uses three inputs: skin type, the day's UV Index, and whether sunscreen is being worn. The estimate is a guide, not a medical guarantee, but it is based on standard dermatology measurements used to study sunburn risk.
Why skin type changes safe sun time
Different skin types can absorb different amounts of ultraviolet (UV) light before turning red. Dermatologists measure this with the Minimal Erythema Dose (MED), the smallest dose of UV that causes visible redness about a day later. A higher MED means skin can take more UV before burning.
This calculator groups skin into four categories, based on the six-type Fitzpatrick scale that dermatologists have used since 1975:

MED is measured in joules per square meter (J/m²), a unit of energy delivered to the skin. The numbers matter less than the pattern: fair skin needs roughly a quarter of the UV dose that dark skin can tolerate before burning.
The UV Index and how the calculator reads it
The UV Index is a 0-to-11+ scale published by weather services worldwide, based on a World Health Organization standard. It tells people how strong the sun's burning power is on a given day and location. Higher numbers mean skin reaches its MED faster.
The calculator offers four bands, matching the ranges shown in most weather apps:
- Low (UV Index 0–2)
- Moderate (UV Index 3–5)
- High (UV Index 6–7)
- Very High (UV Index 8–10+)
Internally, each band is converted to one representative number for the math: 1 for Low, 4 for Moderate, 6.5 for High, and 9 for Very High. These sit near the middle of each published range.
How to calculate safe sun exposure time
Formula without sunscreen
The calculator turns UV Index into an intensity value using a fixed physics constant: each UV Index point equals about 0.025 watts per square meter of skin-damaging (erythemal) UV radiation. Dividing a skin type's MED by that intensity gives the number of seconds until one MED is reached; dividing by 60 converts it to minutes.
Formula with sunscreen
If sunscreen is selected, the calculator multiplies the unprotected time by the SPF number chosen (15, 30, 50, or 70):
The tool uses the printed SPF number directly, with no reduction for real-world factors like under-application. Because that product grows large very quickly, the displayed result is capped at 240 minutes (4 hours), in line with FDA labeling guidance that sunscreen should be reapplied at least every two hours. In practice, selecting any sunscreen option in this calculator produces the 240-minute maximum, because even the lowest SPF choice (15) multiplied by the shortest unprotected time the tool can produce (17 minutes, for fair skin at Very High UV) already exceeds 240.
The safety color (green, yellow, or red) is always based on the unprotected time, not the sunscreen-adjusted number. Sunscreen extends how long a person can stay outside; it does not make a high-UV day safe on its own. The rule: 60 minutes or more of unprotected time is "Safe Exposure," 30–59 minutes is "Use Caution," and under 30 minutes is "High Risk."
Example calculation
A person with medium skin (MED 300) checks the forecast and sees "High" UV. The calculator uses 6.5 for High UV:
Unprotected, they can stay out for about 31 minutes before reaching their MED. Because 31 is at least 30, the calculator marks this "Use Caution" (yellow).
If they apply SPF 30 sunscreen, the tool multiplies: 31 × 30 = 930 minutes. That is far above the 240-minute ceiling, so the displayed result is capped at 240 minutes, with a note to reapply sunscreen every two hours. The safety indicator stays yellow, because it still reflects the 31-minute unprotected risk.

- Seek shade or cover up during peak hours, roughly 10 AM to 4 PM.
- Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen 15–30 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours or right after swimming or heavy sweating.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and clothing that covers the skin.
- Drink water regularly; sun exposure adds to fluid loss.

Frequently asked questions
Does SPF 50 mean I can stay in the sun 50 times longer than with no sunscreen?
This calculator's math does multiply time by the full SPF number, so it shows a much longer number for SPF 50 than for no sunscreen, capped at 240 minutes. In real life, protection is usually lower than the label suggests. Most people apply only 25–50% of the recommended amount, and sweat, water, and rubbing wear sunscreen off, so dermatologists advise reapplying every two hours regardless of the number on the bottle.
Why does the safety color not change when I turn on sunscreen?
The green, yellow, or red indicator reflects how risky the UV level is for that skin type without protection. Sunscreen changes how long someone can stay out, but it does not change how strong the sun is. The World Health Organization advises against using sunscreen as a reason to spend more time in strong sun.
Why is the result capped at 240 minutes?
No sunscreen is proven to protect for unlimited time. U.S. FDA labeling requires reapplication at least every two hours, so showing a number in the thousands of minutes would be misleading. The calculator caps its estimate at 240 minutes (4 hours) and recommends reapplying sunscreen and seeking shade beyond that point.
What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?
UVB (280–315 nanometers) mostly hits the outer skin layer and causes sunburn; it is strongest between 10 AM and 4 PM. UVA (315–400 nanometers) reaches deeper into the skin, contributes to wrinkles and age spots, and stays fairly constant through the day, passing through cloud and glass. Broad-spectrum sunscreen blocks both.
Is getting a tan a safe way to avoid sunburn?
No. A tan is skin's response to UV damage, not a sign of protection from it. Tanning still adds to long-term skin aging and skin cancer risk, even without a visible burn.

Most weather apps, national weather services, and environmental agencies publish a daily UV Index forecast, usually with an hourly breakdown for the strongest part of the day.
