What is a gambrel roof calculator?
A gambrel roof calculator estimates the surface area, roofing materials, and cost of a gambrel roof from its length, width, height, and lower slope angle. A gambrel roof is a barn-style roof with two slopes on each side: a steep lower slope and a shallower upper slope. Barns, farmhouses, and Dutch Colonial houses commonly use this shape because the two-slope design leaves more headroom under the roof than a single-slope gable roof.
How a gambrel roof is shaped
Each side of a gambrel roof has two flat sections joined at a bend called the knuckle. The lower section runs from the eave (the roof's lower edge) up to the knuckle at a steep angle. The upper section runs from the knuckle to the ridge at the top at a gentler angle.
The calculator uses a common convention for locating the knuckle: the upper slope angle is always 45 degrees less than the lower slope angle. For example, a 60-degree lower slope pairs with a 15-degree upper slope. Because of this rule, the lower slope angle must be greater than 45 degrees. A lower slope of 45 degrees or less would make the upper slope zero or negative, which is not a real roof.
Gambrel roof area formula
Let W be the roof's width, H its height, L its length, and θ (theta) the lower slope angle in degrees. All are measured in feet, except θ in degrees.
- Find the upper slope angle: φ = θ − 45
- Find the horizontal run of the lower section: lowerRun = (H − (W/2) × tan(φ)) / (tan(θ) − tan(φ))
- Find the vertical rise of the lower section: lowerRise = lowerRun × tan(θ)
- Find the run and rise of the upper section: upperRun = W/2 − lowerRun upperRise = H − lowerRise
- Find the slant length (the rafter length) of each section with the Pythagorean theorem: lowerSlant = √(lowerRun² + lowerRise²) upperSlant = √(upperRun² + upperRise²)
- Find the total roof area, counting all four roof planes: Roof Area = 2 × L × (lowerSlant + upperSlant)
Not every combination of width, height, and slope describes a real gambrel roof. If the requested height is too large or too small for the chosen lower slope, the run or rise of one section works out to zero or negative, and no such roof exists. The calculator checks for this and shows an error instead of a result.
How to calculate materials and cost
Once the roof area is known, the calculator estimates materials using standard industry coverage rates:
- Shingles (bundles) = (Roof Area ÷ 100) × 3
- Plywood sheathing (sheets) = Roof Area ÷ 32
- Roofing nails (pounds) = (Roof Area ÷ 100) × 2
- Underlayment (rolls) = Roof Area ÷ 200
Total cost adds up each material at a fixed unit price:
- Shingles: $35 per bundle
- Plywood: $25 per sheet
- Nails: $5 per pound
- Underlayment: $40 per roll
Total Cost = (shingles × 25) + (nails × 40)
These prices are estimates. Actual prices vary by region, supplier, and material quality.
Example
Take a gambrel roof with length 40 feet, width 24 feet, height 12 feet, and a lower slope of 67.5 degrees. This is the classic "half-circle" gambrel, where the four corner points of the cross-section sit on a semicircle.
- Upper slope: φ = 67.5 − 45 = 22.5 degrees
- Lower run: lowerRun = (12 − 12 × tan(22.5°)) / (tan(67.5°) − tan(22.5°)) ≈ 3.51 feet
- Lower rise: lowerRise ≈ 3.51 × tan(67.5°) ≈ 8.49 feet
- Upper run: upperRun = 12 − 3.51 = 8.49 feet
- Upper rise: upperRise = 12 − 8.49 = 3.51 feet
- Lower slant: √(3.51² + 8.49²) ≈ 9.18 feet
- Upper slant: √(8.49² + 3.51²) ≈ 9.18 feet
- Roof area: 2 × 40 × (9.18 + 9.18) ≈ 1,469.50 square feet
Materials: about 44.09 bundles of shingles, 45.92 sheets of plywood, 29.39 pounds of nails, and 7.35 rolls of underlayment. Estimated cost: about $3,131.88.
A second example: a 40-foot-long, 30-foot-wide barn roof, 15 feet high, with a 60-degree lower slope, works out to a roof area of about 1,821.17 square feet, needing about 54.63 bundles of shingles, 56.91 sheets of plywood, 36.42 pounds of nails, and 9.11 rolls of underlayment, for an estimated cost of about $3,881.36.

Other roof types compared to gambrel roofs
- Gable roof: two flat slopes meeting at a single ridge. Simpler and cheaper to build, but less usable attic space.
- Hip roof: slopes on all four sides. More stable in high wind, but less attic space than a gambrel roof.

History
The word "gambrel" comes from a term for a horse's hind leg, which bends at a similar angle to the roof's profile. The design became common in North America during the 18th century, especially in Dutch Colonial buildings and barns. Builders favored it because it created more usable space in the upper floor than a gable roof using a similar amount of framing lumber. Traditional gambrel roofs were framed with timber and hand-split wood shingles. Modern versions typically use engineered trusses, asphalt or metal roofing, and synthetic underlayment.
Frequently asked questions
What slope angle should I enter? Enter the lower (steep) slope angle. It must be greater than 45 degrees and no more than 85 degrees. The calculator works out the upper slope automatically as 45 degrees less than the lower slope.
Why does the calculator say no gambrel roof exists for my dimensions? For a given width and lower slope, only a certain range of heights produces a valid gambrel shape. If the height is too tall or too short for that width and slope, the knuckle point falls outside the roof, which is not physically possible. Try a different height, a wider roof, or a steeper lower slope.
How much does it cost to build a gambrel roof? Material costs alone typically run about 12 per square foot, with total installed costs (materials and labor) around 25 per square foot. Gambrel roofs usually cost 15 to 20 percent more than a gable roof of the same footprint, because the framing is more complex.
How much overhang should a gambrel roof have? Most gambrel roofs have an overhang of 12 to 24 inches past the wall. Local climate, building size, and building codes all affect the ideal overhang.
