What is a paver calculator?
A paver calculator works out how many pavers are needed to cover an area such as a patio, walkway, or driveway. Pavers are flat blocks of concrete, brick, or stone laid side by side to form a hard outdoor surface. The calculator divides the total area to be covered by the area of one paver, then adds extra for cuts and breakage.
How to calculate the number of pavers
The number of pavers needed follows a simple formula:
Each part of the formula is found as follows.
- Total area is the length of the space times its width.
- Area of one paver is the paver's length times its width.
- Waste factor is a small multiplier that adds extra pavers to cover cuts, breakage, and pattern loss. The calculator defaults to 1.05, meaning 5% extra.
For a rectangular space, total area is:
The result is rounded up to the next whole paver, since a project cannot buy a fraction of a paver.
Worked example
A patio measures 200 square feet. It will be paved with standard brick pavers that measure 4 inches by 8 inches. In feet, that is 1/3 ft by 2/3 ft, giving a paver area of 2/9 square feet (about 0.2222 sq ft).
- Total area: 200 sq ft.
- Paver area: 2/9 sq ft.
- Base count: 200 Ă· (2/9) = 900 pavers.
- Apply the 5% waste factor: 900 Ă— 1.05 = 945.
The calculator rounds up, so the result is 945 pavers. Dividing by the rounded value 0.22 instead of the exact fraction gives a slightly different, less accurate answer, which is why the calculator keeps full precision internally until the final step.

Waste factor and paving patterns
The waste factor covers pavers lost to cutting at edges, breakage during handling, and pattern requirements. A common range is 5% to 20%, depending on the layout:
- Running bond (a brick-like offset pattern): little waste; 5% is usually enough.
- Basket weave: 5% to 10%, for pattern alignment.
- Herringbone: 10% to 15%, because of the angled cuts at edges.
- Curved or circular layouts: 15% to 20%, due to frequent custom cuts.
The calculator will not accept a waste factor below 1.0, since that would mean ordering fewer pavers than the area requires.
Second worked example
A homeowner plans a patio measuring 16 feet by 14 feet, using the same 4-inch by 8-inch standard brick pavers.
- Total area: 16 Ă— 14 = 224 sq ft.
- Paver area: 2/9 sq ft (about 0.2222 sq ft).
- Base count: 224 Ă· (2/9) = 1,008 pavers.
- Apply the 5% waste factor: 1,008 Ă— 1.05 = 1,058.4.
Rounded up, the project needs 1,059 pavers.
Handling irregular shapes
Many patios and walkways are not simple rectangles. The usual method is to split the shape into rectangles, find the area of each, and add them together before dividing by the paver area.
For example, an L-shaped patio could be split into two rectangles:
- Section 1: 12 ft Ă— 10 ft = 120 sq ft
- Section 2: 8 ft Ă— 6 ft = 48 sq ft
- Combined area: 168 sq ft
That combined area is then used in the paver formula above.
Converting between feet and meters
The calculator can work in either feet or meters. One meter equals about 3.28084 feet, and one foot equals 0.3048 meters. When switching units, the calculator converts the entered dimensions automatically rather than requiring manual conversion.
