A paver sand calculator estimates how much sand is needed to build the sand bed under patio or driveway pavers. It multiplies the area of the paved surface by the depth of the sand layer, then converts that volume into a weight so the material can be ordered and hauled.
Why Sand Goes Under Pavers
Pavers rest on a layer of sand called the bedding layer. It is usually 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 centimeters) deep. This layer lets an installer level each paver precisely and lets water drain away from the surface. A second, thinner layer of sand, called joint sand, is swept into the gaps between pavers after they are laid. Joint sand locks the pavers together and keeps weeds from growing between them. Volume in cubic feet: 12 × 10 × (1.5 ÷ 12) = 15 ft³
Volume in cubic yards: 15 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.56 yd³
Weight: 0.56 × 1.35 ≈ 0.75 tons, or roughly 1,500 pounds.
Example 2 (metric): a 4 m × 3 m patio, 4 cm sand bed
Volume: 4 × 3 × (4 ÷ 100) = 0.48 m³

Mason sand has finer, more rounded particles. It compacts too densely for a bedding layer, which can trap water, so it is mainly used for joints in some traditional installations.
Polymeric sand is a manufactured joint sand containing a binder that hardens when wet. It resists washout and is more resistant to weeds than plain sand, but it is meant only for joints, not for the bedding layer.
