How to Calculate Fence Post Depth
The One-Third Rule
Fence builders have long used a simple starting rule: bury about one-third of the post underground.
Base depth = Fence height ÷ 3
A 6-foot fence starts from a base depth of 2 feet before any adjustment.
Soil Type Factor
Soil affects how well it grips a post. Loose soil needs a deeper hole; dense soil needs less.

Minimum Depth
The calculator never recommends less than 2 feet (24 inches), even for a short fence in stable soil. This fixed floor is a common minimum in general fencing guidance, independent of fence height.
This minimum does not account for the frost line, the depth to which soil freezes in winter. Frozen, expanding soil can push a post upward over time, a problem called frost heave. In a region with a deep frost line, the post hole should go below that line even if it is deeper than the calculator's result. Frost line depth varies by region and is usually available from a local building department.

Total post length = Fence height + Recommended depth
This is the length of lumber or post needed, since part of it will sit below ground.

Example 1. A 6-foot privacy fence in loamy soil, with moderate weather.
- Base depth: 6 ÷ 3 = 2 ft
- Soil factor: 1.0, weather factor: 1.1
- Recommended depth: 2 × 1.0 × 1.1 = 2.2 ft
- Total post length: 6 + 2.2 = 8.2 ft

Both adjustments apply together, not one at a time. The sandy soil alone would call for 2.4 ft, and extreme weather alone would call for 2.6 ft, but combined they call for 3.1 ft.
Example 3. A 3-foot garden fence in rocky soil, with mild weather.
- Base depth: 3 ÷ 3 = 1 ft
- Soil factor: 0.8, weather factor: 1.0
- Formula result: 1 × 0.8 × 1.0 = 0.8 ft
- Because this is below the 2-foot minimum, the calculator returns 2.0 ft.
Reading the Result
The calculator compares the recommended depth to the fence height as a ratio. Below one-quarter of the fence height, it flags the depth as a warning, since stability may be inadequate. Above one-half of the fence height, it labels the depth as more than typically needed, though not unsafe. Between those two points, it labels the depth optimal.
