Documentation
A tree spacing calculator works out how far apart to plant trees so their mature canopies have room to grow without crowding. It uses each tree's expected mature width, adjusted for how large the tree is likely to grow, to recommend a center-to-center planting distance in feet.
Getting this distance right matters. Trees planted too close compete for light, water, and nutrients, which stunts growth and encourages disease. Trees planted too far apart waste space and can look sparse for years while they fill in.
How to Calculate Tree Spacing
For a tree chosen from the species list, the formula is:
The size multiplier adjusts the tree's assumed mature width up or down:

For a custom tree, the calculator skips the multiplier. The mature width entered by the user is already the tree's full-grown size, so multiplying it again would double-count that growth. Recommended spacing for a custom tree simply equals the entered width, rounded to the nearest foot.
This 1.0 multiplier for medium trees follows the standard nursery rule that two identical, mature trees should be spaced so their canopies just touch rather than overlap. The nursery chain Stark Bro's describes it this way: if a tree's mature size is listed as 10 feet wide, leaving 10 feet between planting holes lets the branches spread without crowding. Some other guides recommend extra buffer space, up to about a third more (a spacing multiplier near 1.33), for long-term insurance against competition. This calculator uses the tighter, more widely cited 1.0 standard.

These are averages for healthy specimens under typical conditions. Actual mature size depends on the cultivar, climate, soil, and pruning.

A medium oak has a default mature width of 60 feet. At the medium multiplier (1.0):

Spacing a row of trees
For a privacy screen of medium cherry trees (default mature width 20 feet) along a 100-foot property line: recommended spacing is 20 Ă— 1.0 = 20 feet between trunks. Five trees spaced 20 feet apart take up four 20-foot gaps, or 80 feet total, leaving about 10 feet of buffer at each end of the line.
Custom trees
For a tree not on the list, entering a custom mature width skips the size multiplier entirely. A custom width of 40 feet gives a recommended spacing of 40 feet, whether "small," "medium," or "large" is selected, because the entered number is already treated as the tree's mature size.
Using the Calculator

Choose a size category: small for dwarf rootstock or heavily pruned trees, medium for typical growth, or large for rich soil and optimal growing conditions. The calculator returns the recommended center-to-center spacing in feet, along with a diagram showing two trees at that distance.
The most common mistake is basing spacing on a tree's current size instead of its size at maturity. A five-foot sapling can become a forty-foot-wide tree within fifteen years, so spacing decisions should always use the mature width, not the size at planting.
Real-World Spacing Guidelines
Home landscaping: measure the available yard space before choosing a species. A 60-foot-wide backyard can fit one medium maple (40-foot spacing) with clearance from a fence, or possibly two if some canopy overlap is acceptable.
Orchards: fruit tree spacing depends heavily on rootstock. Semi-dwarf apple rootstocks (such as M.26 or M.7) are commonly spaced 12 to 15 feet apart within a row. Standard, full-size rootstock needs 25 to 30 feet. Tight spacing in orchards increases disease risk because it reduces airflow around leaves and fruit.
Street trees: city plantings often use tighter spacing than the calculator recommends, because regular pruning and confined root zones limit how large the trees actually grow. Large shade trees along streets are commonly spaced 50 to 60 feet apart.
Forestry: reforestation projects often plant closer together at first, around 8 to 12 feet, expecting natural competition to thin the stand over decades. This mimics how trees establish in the wild.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if trees are planted too close together? Roots and canopies compete for water, nutrients, and light. This can stunt growth, cause lopsided branch development, and, for fruit trees, reduce airflow enough to encourage fungal disease.
How should spacing be measured? Center-to-center, from the middle of one trunk to the middle of the next. Measuring from canopy edge to canopy edge is a common mistake — the formula already accounts for canopy spread.
Can different species be planted closer together than the calculator suggests? Sometimes. Trees with different heights, root depths, or canopy shapes can share space more efficiently than two identical trees, because they compete less directly for the same light and root zone.
Why does the calculator use a 1.0 multiplier instead of a wider factor? A multiplier of 1.0 means two identical, mature trees are spaced so their canopies just touch. This matches common nursery guidance and avoids under-using planting space, while still preventing canopies from overlapping and competing.
How does soil affect spacing? Poor, compacted, or shallow soil tends to produce smaller trees, which can tolerate slightly closer spacing. Rich, deep soil produces larger trees, so the "Large" size setting is often more accurate there.
How far should a tree be planted from a building? A common rule is to leave at least half the tree's mature height away from structures, plus room for the mature canopy width, to avoid root damage to foundations and pipes and branch damage to roofs.
