Aluminium weight calculator

An aluminium weight calculator finds the weight of a rectangular piece of aluminium from its length, width, and height. It multiplies the volume of the shape by the density of aluminium, 2.7 grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm³).

Aluminium weight formula

The calculator works in two steps.

Step 1: Find the volume. All three dimensions are converted to centimetres, then multiplied together:

Step 2: Find the weight. The volume is multiplied by the density of aluminium:

The result can be shown in grams or kilograms. To convert grams to kilograms, divide by 1,000.

How to calculate aluminium weight

  1. Enter the length, width, and height of the aluminium piece.
  2. Choose the unit for the dimensions: millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), or metres (m).
  3. Choose the output unit for the weight: grams (g) or kilograms (kg).
  4. Read the volume and weight in the results panel.

To convert dimensions by hand: divide millimetres by 10 to get centimetres, or multiply metres by 100 to get centimetres. Every dimension must be in the same unit before multiplying.

Example: aluminium sheet

A standard aluminium sheet measures 121.9 cm by 243.8 cm by 0.32 cm (about 4 feet by 8 feet by 1/8 inch).

  • Volume: 121.9 × 243.8 × 0.32 = 9,510.2 cm³
  • Weight: 9,510.2 × 2.7 = 25,677 g, or about 25.7 kg (56.6 lb)

Example: aluminium block

A solid aluminium block measures 30 cm by 20 cm by 2 cm.

  • Volume: 30 × 20 × 2 = 1,200 cm³
  • Weight: 1,200 × 2.7 = 3,240 g, or about 3.2 kg (7.1 lb)

What the calculator does not handle

The calculator only works for solid rectangular shapes: sheets, plates, bars, and blocks. It cannot directly work out the weight of shapes such as angles, tubes, or other hollow or curved profiles, because their cross-section is not a simple rectangle. For a hollow shape, one workaround is to calculate the weight of the outer block, calculate the weight of the empty space inside it as if it were solid aluminium, and subtract the second figure from the first.

Density of aluminium

Pure aluminium and most common aluminium alloys, such as 6061 and 6063, have a density close to 2.7 g/cm³, which equals 2,700 kilograms per cubic metre. This is the value the calculator uses. Some alloys are slightly denser or lighter, so a calculation for a specific alloy may be off by a small percentage.

For comparison, steel has a density of about 7.85 g/cm³ and copper about 8.96 g/cm³. A block of aluminium weighs roughly a third as much as the same-sized block of steel or copper.

Does this calculator work for aluminium tubes or angles? No. It multiplies length, width, and height as if the object were a solid rectangular block, so it only gives an accurate result for that shape. Hollow or irregular shapes need a different calculation, described above.

What is the difference between "aluminium" and "aluminum"? They are two spellings of the same metal. "Aluminium" is standard outside the United States; "aluminum" is the American spelling. Both describe the same element, with the same density.
