Metal Weight Calculator
A metal weight calculator finds the weight of a solid metal block from its length, width, height, and metal type. It multiplies the block's volume by the density of the chosen metal. This tool covers 14 common metals, from aluminum and steel to gold and platinum.
How to Calculate Metal Weight
Weight depends on two things: how much space the metal takes up (volume) and how tightly its atoms are packed (density). The steps are:
- Measure the length, width, and height of the block, in centimeters.
- Multiply those three numbers to get the volume, in cubic centimeters (cm³).
- Look up the density of the metal, in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³).
- Multiply the volume by the density to get the weight, in grams.
If the result is 1000 grams or more, the calculator shows it in kilograms instead, since 1000 g equals 1 kg.
Metal Weight Formula
The formula is:
Weight = Length × Width × Height × Density
This is the same as Weight = Volume × Density, since Volume = Length × Width × Height. It only applies to a rectangular block. A cylinder, pipe, or other shape needs a different volume formula before this step (see Limitations, below).
Densities of the 14 Supported Metals
Density is how much a given volume of a material weighs. It is usually written in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³). A denser metal weighs more for the same size.

Platinum is the densest metal on the list, about 7.9 times denser than aluminum, the lightest one.
Worked Examples
Example 1: an iron cube. A cube of iron measures 10 cm on each side.
- Volume = 10 × 10 × 10 = 1000 cm³
- Density of iron = 7.87 g/cm³
- Weight = 1000 × 7.87 = 7870 g = 7.87 kg
Example 2: a small aluminum block. A block measures 5 cm × 5 cm × 5 cm.
- Volume = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125 cm³
- Density of aluminum = 2.70 g/cm³
- Weight = 125 × 2.70 = 337.50 g
Because this result is under 1000 g, the calculator displays it in grams rather than kilograms.
Why Steel Weighs More Than Aluminum
For a block of the same size, steel weighs about 2.9 times as much as aluminum. This comes directly from their densities: steel is 7.85 g/cm³ and aluminum is 2.70 g/cm³, and 7.85 divided by 2.70 is about 2.9. This is why aluminum parts are common in aircraft and vehicles, where lower weight matters, while steel is favored where strength and low cost matter more than weight.
Limitations
The calculator computes the volume of a rectangular block only. It cannot directly find the weight of a cylinder, pipe, sphere, or I-beam. To weigh one of those shapes, calculate its volume separately using the correct formula for that shape (for example, π × radius² × length for a solid cylinder), then multiply the result by the metal's density from the table above.
The density values are for pure or standard-grade metals. Real alloys and manufactured products can weigh slightly more or less than these figures suggest, since exact composition varies by supplier and grade.

Why is steel heavier than aluminum for the same size? Because steel is denser. Density measures how much mass is packed into a given volume, and steel packs in about 2.9 times more mass than aluminum for the same volume.
Does the calculator account for different metal grades or alloys? No. It uses one standard density value per metal. Specific alloys and grades can differ slightly from these values, so results are an estimate for those materials.
