What is a drywall calculator?

A drywall calculator estimates how many sheets of drywall are needed to cover a wall. The user enters the wall's height and width in feet. The calculator multiplies these to get the area, then divides by the size of a standard sheet to find the number of sheets to buy.

Drywall is a flat panel made mostly of gypsum plaster pressed between two sheets of paper. It is also called gypsum board, wallboard, or sheetrock. Builders use it to cover the inside of walls and ceilings in most homes and offices built after the mid-20th century.

How to calculate drywall sheets needed

The formula

The calculation has two steps.

Step 1: Find the wall area.

Wall area = height × width

Both measurements are in feet, so the result is in square feet.

Step 2: Find the number of sheets.

Sheets needed = wall area ÷ sheet size, rounded up to the next whole number

Rounding up matters because stores sell drywall only in full sheets. A project that needs 2.1 sheets still requires buying 3.

Standard sheet sizes

A standard drywall sheet measures 4 feet by 8 feet, an area of 32 square feet. This is the size the calculator uses by default. Other sizes exist for specific jobs.

Longer sheets mean fewer seams to finish, but they cost more, weigh more, and are harder to carry and fit through doorways.

Worked example

A wall measures 8 feet high and 10 feet wide.

Wall area = 8 × 10 = 80 square feet

Sheets needed = 80 ÷ 32 = 2.5, rounded up to 3 sheets

For a full room, each wall is calculated the same way and the sheet counts are added together. A 12-foot by 10-foot room with 8-foot ceilings has four walls: two measuring 12' × 8' and two measuring 10' × 8'.

  • Two 12' × 8' walls: 2 × 96 = 192 square feet
  • Two 10' × 8' walls: 2 × 80 = 160 square feet
  • Total: 352 square feet

Sheets needed = 352 ÷ 32 = 11 sheets, with no rounding required since the total divides evenly.

Accounting for doors, windows, and waste

The calculator measures the full rectangle of a wall. It does not automatically subtract openings such as doors and windows. To get a tighter estimate, subtract their area before dividing by the sheet size.

A standard interior door (3' × 7') removes about 21 square feet. A typical window (3' × 5') removes about 15 square feet. Using the 12' × 10' room above: 352 − 21 − 15 = 316 square feet, which needs 316 ÷ 32 = 9.875, rounded up to 10 sheets.

Many builders skip small deductions and instead add extra material to cover cutting waste, damaged sheets, and mistakes. A common rule of thumb is to add 10 to 15 percent to the calculated sheet count for simple rectangular rooms, and more for rooms with many corners or angles.

A short history of drywall

Inventor Augustine Sackett patented an early gypsum panel, known as Sackett Board, in 1894. He sold the patent to the United States Gypsum Company (USG) in 1901. USG kept refining the product, and by 1916 it had developed a solid gypsum core with square edges close to the drywall sheet used today. USG later marketed the product under the brand name Sheetrock, a name still used informally for drywall. Demand for drywall grew sharply during and after World War II, when labor shortages made its fast installation attractive for military housing and, later, the postwar housing boom. Today several variants exist, including moisture-resistant board for bathrooms, fire-rated "Type X" board for shared walls, and soundproof and impact-resistant versions for specific building codes.

Frequently asked questions

How many drywall sheets does a 12' × 12' room need? With 8-foot ceilings, the four walls total 384 square feet (four walls of 12' × 8' = 96 sq ft each). That needs 384 ÷ 32 = 12 sheets. Subtracting a standard door (21 sq ft) and window (15 sq ft) brings the total to 348 square feet, which needs 11 sheets.

Does the calculator subtract doors and windows automatically? No. It calculates the full wall area from height and width. Subtract the area of any openings manually before entering the adjusted number, or leave them in as a built-in waste allowance.

How much extra drywall should I buy? A common guideline is 10 to 15 percent above the calculated sheet count, to cover cuts, breakage, and mistakes. Complex layouts with many corners may need more.

Can this calculator be used for ceilings? Yes. The formula is the same: multiply the ceiling's length and width, then divide by the sheet size. Ceiling installation is more physically demanding and often produces more waste than wall installation.

How do I calculate an irregular or L-shaped wall? Split the wall into rectangular sections, calculate the area of each one separately, and add the areas together before dividing by the sheet size. Running the calculator once per rectangular section works well for this.

What sheet size does this calculator assume? It uses the standard 4' × 8' sheet (32 square feet). If a project uses a different sheet size, divide the total wall area by that sheet's area instead and round up.
