What is a wainscoting calculator?
A wainscoting calculator finds the square footage of wall paneling needed for a room. Wainscoting is decorative paneling fixed to the lower part of an interior wall, usually made of wood, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), or PVC. The calculator multiplies the length of the wall by the height of the paneling to give the area in square feet.
Wainscoting formula
The area of wainscoting is length times height:
Area (sq ft) = Wall Length (ft) × Wainscoting Height (ft)
Enter the total length of wall to be covered and the height the paneling will rise from the floor. The calculator multiplies the two numbers and shows the result in square feet. If either value is zero or negative, no result is shown, since a wall cannot have a length or height of zero.
If wainscoting will run along more than one wall, add the lengths of each wall together first, then enter that total as the wall length. For a rectangular room, this total is the perimeter: twice the room length plus twice the room width.
Worked example
A wall is 10 feet long. The wainscoting will be 4 feet high.
Area = 10 × 4 = 40 square feet
For a full room, add the walls first. A room measures 12 feet by 14 feet, and the wainscoting will be 3 feet high (a common chair-rail height).
- Perimeter = 2 × (12 + 14) = 52 feet
- Area = 52 × 3 = 156 square feet
The room needs 156 square feet of wainscoting material, before subtracting any doors or windows.
Accounting for doors, windows, and waste
The calculator gives the raw area of a wall or room. It does not automatically subtract openings or add extra material for cutting waste. Two adjustments are worth making by hand before buying material.
Doors and windows. Measure the width and height of each opening that falls within the wainscoting zone, multiply them, and subtract that area from the total. A door that is 3 feet wide and, within a 3-foot-high wainscoting run, 3 feet tall removes 9 square feet from the total.
Waste. Cutting boards to fit corners, outlets, and vents produces offcuts that cannot be reused. Many installers buy 10% to 15% more material than the calculated area to cover this waste. For 156 square feet, adding 10% means buying about 172 square feet.
Standard wainscoting heights
Wainscoting height is a design choice, not a fixed rule, but a few heights are common:
- Chair rail height, 32 to 36 inches (about 2.7 to 3 feet), is the most common choice and lines up with a chair rail molding cap.
- Half-wall height, around 48 inches (4 feet), is used in hallways and stairwells.
- Two-thirds wall height is sometimes used in rooms with tall ceilings, for a more formal look.
A room with a standard 8-foot ceiling most often uses 32- to 36-inch wainscoting.

What is the standard height for wainscoting? Most wainscoting is installed 32 to 36 inches above the floor, roughly chair-rail height. Taller rooms sometimes use 40 to 48 inches.
How do I calculate how much wainscoting I need for a whole room? Add up the length of every wall that will be covered to get a total wall length, then multiply that total by the wainscoting height. Subtract the area of any doors or windows inside the wainscoting zone, then add 10% to 15% for waste.

What is the difference between wainscoting and beadboard? Wainscoting is the general term for paneling on the lower part of a wall. Beadboard is one style of wainscoting: narrow vertical boards with a rounded groove, or bead, between them. Both are measured with the same length-times-height formula.
How do I measure wainscoting for a staircase wall? A staircase wall is not a simple rectangle, since the wall gets taller as the stairs rise. Measure the wainscoting height at the bottom and top of the run, add the two heights, multiply by the horizontal length of the stairs, and divide by two. This trapezoid formula gives the area of that section; add it to the area of any flat walls in the room.
