Deck Stain Calculator
A deck stain calculator estimates how many gallons of stain a wooden or composite deck needs, based on the deck's surface area and the type of material it is made from. Different decking materials absorb stain at different rates, so the same size deck can need very different amounts of stain depending on what it is built from.
Buying too little stain means an extra trip to the store, and a new can may not match the color of the batch already applied. Buying too much wastes money on stain that may go bad before the next job. A coverage estimate based on the deck's area and material gives a reliable starting point for either problem.
How to Calculate Deck Stain Needed
The amount of stain needed depends on two numbers: the deck's area and the coverage rate of the chosen material.
Deck area is length multiplied by width:
For an oddly shaped deck, split it into rectangles, find the area of each, and add them together.
Coverage Rate by Material
Coverage rate is how many square feet one gallon of stain covers. It depends on how porous the wood is. Denser wood absorbs less stain, so a gallon spreads over more area. Less dense wood, or wood that has been chemically treated, absorbs more stain per square foot, so a gallon covers less ground.

Hardwood species like ipe and mahogany have the highest coverage rate of the four, not the lowest. Their dense cell structure means the wood physically cannot absorb as much liquid as a softer, more porous wood can. This is also why hardwood decks need more surface preparation. Stain that cannot soak in sits on top and can peel.
Worked Example
A deck measuring 16 feet by 12 feet is built from cedar.
- Deck area: 16 × 12 = 192 square feet.
- Cedar coverage rate: 175 square feet per gallon.
- Stain needed: 192 ÷ 175 ≈ 1.1 gallons.
Since stain is sold in whole containers, this deck needs a 1-gallon can plus a smaller top-up container, or a single larger can, to cover one coat.
A second example shows why material matters. A deck of the same 192 square feet built from ipe hardwood needs 192 ÷ 350 ≈ 0.55 gallons, about half as much stain as the cedar deck, because hardwood absorbs far less liquid.
Factors That Change the Amount Needed
The formula gives a baseline for one coat on wood in average condition. Several factors push actual usage higher or lower.
Wood condition. Weathered, sun-bleached wood has a rougher, more porous surface than new wood and absorbs more stain. A deck that has not been stained in several years often needs noticeably more than the baseline estimate.
Application method. Spraying uses more stain than brushing or rolling, because some of the sprayed stain becomes overspray that never lands on the wood.
Number of coats. A first coat seals the wood and uses the most stain. A second coat goes onto an already-sealed surface and typically uses less than the first.
Temperature and humidity. Stain applied in very hot weather can dry on the surface before it penetrates, which can require an extra coat. Manufacturers generally recommend applying stain between 50°F and 90°F.
Railings and Stairs
The formula above covers the flat deck surface only. Railings and stairs add extra surface area that is easy to underestimate, since balusters, rails, and edges add up to more area than they appear to have.
A commonly used estimate is about 6 square feet of stainable surface per linear foot of a standard 36-inch railing with balusters. Twenty feet of railing would then need stain for roughly 120 square feet, calculated separately using the same formula.
For stairs, add up the tread and riser area of each step (tread width × depth, plus riser height × width) and multiply by the number of steps.
Types of Deck Stain
The type of stain, not just the wood, affects how much is needed and how long it lasts.
- Transparent stains add little color and mainly protect the wood. They cover roughly 200–250 square feet per gallon but typically need reapplication every 1–2 years.
- Semi-transparent stains add some color while letting the wood grain show. They cover roughly 150–200 square feet per gallon and usually last 2–3 years.
- Semi-solid stains contain more pigment, cover roughly 125–175 square feet per gallon, and usually last 3–4 years.
- Solid stains are the most opaque, covering roughly 100–150 square feet per gallon, but typically last 4–5 years because the heavier pigment load blocks more UV light.
These coverage ranges depend on the stain product itself and are separate from the material-based rates in the table above; the actual amount used for a given deck depends on both the wood and the stain type chosen.
How to Use the Calculator
- Measure the deck's length and width in feet. Break irregular shapes into rectangles and measure each one.
- Select the deck material: pressure-treated wood, cedar/redwood, hardwood, or composite.
- Read the results: total area, coverage rate, and estimated gallons needed.
- Round the result up to the nearest container size, since stain is not sold in fractional gallons.
- Add extra for older or weathered decks, for spray application, and for railings or stairs, which are calculated separately.
