A cat calorie calculator estimates how many calories a cat needs to eat each day. It uses the cat's body weight as a starting point, then adjusts the number for activity level and for conditions such as being overweight, underweight, senior, pregnant, or nursing.
How to calculate a cat's daily calorie needs
Veterinary nutrition guides build the estimate in two steps.
- Calculate the resting energy requirement (RER): the energy a cat would burn lying still for a day.
- Multiply the RER by a single adjustment factor for the cat's activity level or health condition. This gives the daily energy requirement (DER), the number of calories to actually feed.
Only one adjustment factor is applied at a time. A cat that is both senior and overweight does not get two factors multiplied together; the calculator picks the single factor for the condition that matters most for feeding safety.
Cat calorie formula
The resting energy requirement formula is the same for cats and dogs:
RER (kcal/day) = 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75
The daily energy requirement is:
DER (kcal/day) = RER × adjustment factor
The exponent 0.75 reflects the fact that metabolism does not scale in direct proportion to body weight. A cat twice as heavy as another does not need exactly twice the calories.
Activity level factors (no health condition)
These factors apply to an adult cat with no other adjustment selected:

A cat on "Low" activity needs about 30% fewer calories than one on "High" activity, because 1.0 is roughly 29% less than 1.4.
Health condition factors
When a health condition applies, it replaces the activity factor rather than combining with it. From highest to lowest priority:

Senior cats do not need fewer calories than younger adults. Cats older than about 11 years often absorb nutrients less efficiently, so veterinary sources set their factor at or above normal adult maintenance, not below it. An overweight senior cat still uses the weight-loss factor (0.8), because keeping the cat at a healthy weight takes priority over the age adjustment.

Example calculations
Example 1: Adult indoor cat, no health condition
A 4 kg cat with low activity and no health condition selected.
- RER = 70 × 4^0.75 = 70 × 2.828 ≈ 198.0
- Factor = 1.0 (Low activity)
- DER = 198.0 × 1.0 ≈ 198 calories per day
Example 2: Senior cat that is also overweight
A 5.5 kg cat with low activity, marked as both senior and overweight.
- RER = 70 × 5.5^0.75 = 70 × 3.592 ≈ 251.4
- Because overweight takes priority over the senior adjustment, the factor is 0.8, not a combination of factors.
- DER = 251.4 × 0.8 ≈ 201 calories per day
Example 3: Pregnant cat
A 3.5 kg cat with moderate activity, marked as pregnant.
- RER = 70 × 3.5^0.75 = 70 × 2.559 ≈ 179.1
- The pregnancy factor (2.0) overrides the activity factor.
- DER = 179.1 × 2.0 ≈ 358 calories per day
Converting calories to food portions
Once the daily calorie target is known, it can be turned into a feeding amount.
- Check the cat food label for calories per cup, can, or gram.
- Divide the daily calorie target by the calories in one serving.
- Split the result across two or three meals a day.
- Weigh the cat every few weeks and adjust the portion if its weight is trending up or down.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories does an adult cat need per day?
Most adult cats need between about 180 and 380 calories a day, depending on body weight and activity level. A calculator that uses the RER formula gives a figure specific to one cat's weight.
Do indoor cats need fewer calories than outdoor cats?
Yes. An indoor cat with low activity uses a factor of 1.0, compared with 1.4 for a very active outdoor cat, a difference of about 30%.
Should senior cats eat fewer calories?
No. Cats over about 11 years old often need slightly more calories than a younger adult at the same activity level, because their bodies absorb nutrients less efficiently. The exception is a senior cat that is also overweight, which still needs a calorie reduction for weight loss.
How many calories do pregnant or nursing cats need?
Veterinary sources give a range of roughly 1.6 to 6 times normal maintenance calories, depending on the stage of pregnancy or lactation. A single factor of 2.0 sits inside that range and is commonly used as a general estimate.
Can this formula be used for kittens?
No. Kittens grow rapidly and need proportionally more calories than adult cats, with needs that change every few weeks. A veterinarian should set a kitten's feeding plan.
How accurate is a calorie calculator for cats?
The RER and DER formulas are standard veterinary estimates, but an individual cat's actual needs can vary because of breed, metabolism, neuter status, and health. Body weight should be monitored and the amount fed adjusted over time rather than treated as fixed.
