Cat Growth Predictor

A cat growth predictor is a calculator that estimates a kitten's adult weight from its breed, current age, current weight, and sex. It works by comparing a kitten's weight to typical growth curves recorded for its breed, then projecting that curve forward to full maturity.

What the calculator needs

The calculator takes four inputs:

  • Breed: one of ten breeds, each with its own average adult weight, growth rate, and age at maturity. A mixed-breed cat can use the breed it most resembles.
  • Age: the cat's age in months, from 1 to 240.
  • Current weight: in pounds or kilograms.
  • Sex: male or female, since males of most breeds grow heavier than females.

It returns a predicted adult weight in both pounds and kilograms, plus a chart of the expected weight curve from birth to 24 months.

How to calculate a kitten's predicted adult weight

The growth curve

Each breed in the calculator has two fixed numbers: a growth rate and a maturity age (the age in months at which the breed is treated as fully grown). Faster-maturing breeds, such as the Siamese, have a higher growth rate and a lower maturity age. Slower-maturing breeds, such as the Maine Coon, have a lower growth rate and a higher maturity age.

From these, the calculator works out how far along the growth curve a kitten currently sits:

Growth progress is a fraction between 0 (birth) and 1 (fully grown). Dividing the kitten's current weight by this fraction gives a raw estimate of adult weight:

The cap at twice the breed average stops the estimate from running away for very young or unusually heavy kittens.

Blending with the breed average

A raw estimate from a very young kitten is unreliable, because small kittens have not yet shown their growth pattern. The calculator corrects for this with a reliability factor that rises from 0 at birth to 1 at six months of age:

The final prediction blends the raw estimate with the breed's average adult weight, weighted by reliability:

At one month, reliability is about 0.17, so the prediction leans heavily on the breed average. By six months and beyond, reliability is 1, so the prediction depends entirely on the kitten's own growth trajectory. Once a cat reaches its breed's maturity age, the calculator simply returns its current weight, since it is treated as an adult.

Worked example

A male Maine Coon kitten is 4 months old and weighs 6 lb. The Maine Coon's data in the calculator: average adult male weight 18 lb, growth rate 0.7, maturity age 24 months.

  1. Growth progress: (4 / 24)^0.7 ≈ 0.285
  2. Raw estimate: 6 / 0.285 ≈ 21.0 lb (below the 36 lb cap, so it stands)
  3. Reliability: 4 / 6 ≈ 0.667
  4. Predicted adult weight: (21.0 × 0.667) + (18 × 0.333) ≈ 20.0 lb (about 9.1 kg)

A higher growth rate means the curve rises faster in early months. A higher maturity age means the calculator keeps predicting change for longer before treating the cat as fully grown.

Typical adult weight by breed

The calculator stores one average adult weight per breed for each sex, then treats ±20% of that average as the breed's typical range.

Within a breed, males sit toward the top of the range and females toward the bottom. Across the ten breeds, males average 20% to 50% heavier than females of the same breed; the gap is widest in the Maine Coon, Bengal, and Sphynx, where the calculator's average male weight is 1.5 times the average female weight.

Using the calculator

A user selects a breed, enters the kitten's age in months and current weight, and chooses male or female. The calculator then shows the predicted adult weight in both pounds and kilograms, the breed's typical weight range, and a chart plotting expected weight from birth to 24 months. The prediction can be copied to share with a veterinarian or breeder.

The prediction is a statistical estimate, not a guarantee. It reflects average patterns for the selected breed and does not account for an individual cat's genetics, diet, activity level, or health.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the cat growth predictor?

Accuracy depends on age. Because the reliability factor reaches 1 at six months, predictions for kittens six months and older draw mostly on the kitten's own weight and growth curve. Predictions for kittens under six months lean more on the breed average and are less precise, since young kittens have not yet shown their full growth pattern.

When do cats reach their adult size?

It depends on the breed selected. In the calculator, breeds such as the Siamese, Abyssinian, and Domestic Shorthair are treated as fully grown by 12 months. Slower-maturing breeds such as the Maine Coon and Ragdoll are treated as fully grown by 24 months. Some real Maine Coons continue filling out with muscle past two years, but the calculator does not model change beyond a breed's listed maturity age.

Do male cats grow larger than female cats?

Yes, in every breed included in the calculator, the average adult male weight is higher than the average adult female weight, by a factor of about 1.2 to 1.5 depending on breed. The gap is widest in the Maine Coon, Bengal, and Sphynx.

Can the calculator be used for a mixed-breed kitten?

Yes. A user can pick the breed the kitten most resembles, or Domestic Shorthair as a general default. The prediction will be less precise than for a purebred kitten, since a mixed-breed cat may not follow either parent breed's growth curve exactly.

Why might a kitten's actual adult weight differ from the prediction?

The calculator only uses breed, age, current weight, and sex. It does not account for individual genetics, diet quality, activity level, spaying or neutering, or underlying health conditions, all of which can push an individual cat's adult weight above or below the breed average.

What breeds does the calculator support?

Ten breeds: Domestic Shorthair, Domestic Longhair, Maine Coon, Persian, Siamese, Bengal, Ragdoll, Sphynx, Scottish Fold, and Abyssinian. Each has its own stored average adult weight, growth rate, and maturity age.
