Cat Fish Oil Dosage Calculator
The cat fish oil dosage calculator estimates how many milligrams of combined EPA and DHA a cat should get each day. It uses the cat's weight, age, and health status. EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are the two omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. The calculator reports a dose in milligrams of EPA plus DHA, not milligrams of fish oil itself, because a typical fish oil product is only about 30% EPA and DHA by weight.
Why cats are given fish oil
Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil are used to support several areas of feline health:
- Skin and coat: can reduce inflammation and dry, flaky skin.
- Joints: has anti-inflammatory effects that may ease stiffness in cats with arthritis.
- Heart: supports normal heart rhythm and blood vessel function.
- Kidneys: some studies suggest it may slow progression of chronic kidney disease.
- Brain: DHA supports brain development in kittens and may help older cats stay sharp.
How to calculate cat fish oil dosage
The formula
The calculator first converts the cat's weight to kilograms, then multiplies by a dose rate in milligrams of EPA+DHA per kilogram of body weight per day:

The calculator uses the same 112 mg/kg therapeutic rate for joint issues, skin/coat issues, and heart issues. It does not vary the rate by condition. This rate comes from feline studies on osteoarthritis and chronic kidney disease, which used comparable EPA+DHA levels.
For cats older than 10 years, the base rate is increased by 15%, but never above the top of the published band for that cat (50 mg/kg for a healthy senior, 120 mg/kg for a senior with a health condition). Kittens are not given a reduced rate. They use the same per-kilogram rate as an adult cat with the same health status, because a kitten's energy needs per kilogram are two to three times an adult's, and DHA is important for brain and eye development.
Dosage range
The calculator also shows a minimum and maximum dose. This range is not a fixed percentage of the recommended dose. It comes from applying the low and high ends of the published band directly to the cat's weight:
For a healthy cat, the band is 20–50 mg/kg. For a cat with a diagnosed condition, the band is 112–120 mg/kg, a much narrower range because the rate is already close to the top of what published sources support. No safe upper limit for EPA+DHA has been established in cats, so doses are capped at these published levels rather than increased further.
Converting to an amount of fish oil product
The recommended dose is in milligrams of EPA+DHA, not milligrams of fish oil. To find how much product to give, the calculator divides the dose by the percentage of EPA+DHA printed on the product label:
If the percentage is not entered, the calculator assumes 30%, a common concentration for over-the-counter fish oil. The result is a weight of product, not a volume. Check the product label to convert that weight into drops or milliliters.
Example calculations
Example 1: healthy adult cat
A healthy 10-pound, 5-year-old cat.
- Weight in kilograms: 10 × 0.453592 ≈ 4.54 kg
- Dose rate: 40 mg/kg (healthy, not senior)
- Recommended dose: 4.54 kg × 40 mg/kg ≈ 181 mg of EPA+DHA per day
- Dosage range: 91–227 mg
- Fish oil needed at 30% EPA+DHA: about 603 mg of product per day
Example 2: senior cat with joint issues
A 12-pound, 13-year-old cat with joint issues.
- Weight in kilograms: 12 × 0.453592 ≈ 5.44 kg
- Dose rate: the therapeutic base is 112 mg/kg. Because the cat is over 10, that is raised 15% to 128.8 mg/kg, then capped at the band maximum of 120 mg/kg.
- Recommended dose: 5.44 kg × 120 mg/kg ≈ 653 mg of EPA+DHA per day
- Dosage range: 610–653 mg
- Fish oil needed at 30% EPA+DHA: about 2,177 mg of product per day
Example 3: kitten with skin issues
A 4-pound, 8-month-old kitten with dry, flaky skin gets the same 112 mg/kg therapeutic rate as an adult cat with skin issues, because kittens are not given a reduced rate. Its weight is 4 × 0.453592 ≈ 1.81 kg, giving a recommended dose of about 203 mg per day, with a range of 203–218 mg.
Fish oil safety in cats
Fish oil has a wide margin of safety, but it is not right for every cat. A veterinarian should be consulted before giving fish oil to a cat with a bleeding disorder, a fish allergy, or pancreatitis, or one taking blood thinners or anti-inflammatory drugs. Supplementation is usually stopped one to two weeks before scheduled surgery.
Signs of too much fish oil include diarrhea, vomiting, a fishy odor on the breath or skin, and slower blood clotting. Long-term high doses can also lead to vitamin E deficiency. If any of these signs appear, the dose should be reduced and a veterinarian consulted.
Frequently asked questions
How much fish oil should I give my cat? A healthy adult cat needs about 40 mg of combined EPA and DHA per kilogram of body weight per day, which works out to roughly 18 mg per pound. A cat with a diagnosed joint, skin/coat, or heart condition needs a higher, therapeutic dose of about 112–120 mg per kilogram (roughly 51–54 mg per pound).
Do kittens need a lower dose than adult cats? No. The calculator gives kittens the same per-kilogram rate as an adult cat with the same health status. Kittens are not given a reduced dose because their energy and nutrient needs per kilogram are higher than an adult's, and DHA supports their brain and eye development.
Are the doses different for joint problems, skin problems, and heart problems? No, the calculator uses one therapeutic rate, 112 mg/kg (up to 120 mg/kg for senior cats), for all three conditions. This reflects the published feline studies the rate is drawn from. A veterinarian may recommend a different amount for a specific condition.
Is fish oil dosage measured in milligrams of fish oil or milligrams of EPA+DHA? The recommended dose is milligrams of combined EPA and DHA, the active omega-3 compounds, not milligrams of fish oil. Because fish oil products are typically only about 30% EPA+DHA by weight, the amount of product needed is roughly three times the EPA+DHA dose. Check the product label for its exact EPA+DHA percentage.
Is there a safe upper limit for fish oil in cats? No official upper limit has been established for cats. Because of that, published doses are treated as a ceiling rather than a starting point to build upward from, which is why the calculator caps senior and therapeutic doses at the top of the published bands.
When will I see results from fish oil supplementation? Coat improvements are typically reported within three to six weeks of daily use, with joint benefits often taking four to eight weeks. Consistency matters more than a single large dose.
